Our Advisory Board serves as an invaluable resource for the organization, providing oversight, strategic planning and resources that help us successfully deliver our mission. Advisory Board Member Roles & Responsibilities

Our Mission: At Justice for My Sister, we train women of color, nonbinary artists, former foster youth and survivors of gender-based violence to make films with a gender equity and racial justice lens, as a means to heal from trauma and overcome financial barriers to entering the TV & film industry.

Advisory Board Position: The Advisory Board provides mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Board involvement is critical to the Executive Director’s ability to carry out day-to-day operations of Justice for My Sister. Advisory Board Members oversee program impact, as well as creative and fiscal goals.

Leadership & Governance Oversight

  • Serve as an advisor to the Executive Director (ED) as she develops/implements JFMS’ strategic plan.

  • Review outcomes and metrics created by JFMS to evaluate its impact. 

  • Attend quarterly Advisory Board Member meetings. 

  • Serve on a committee that meets monthly. Current existing committees include hiring, fundraising, marketing, and fee-for-service.

  • Approve JFMS’ annual budget, audit reports, and business decisions. 

  • Contribute to an annual performance evaluation of the Executive Director. 

  • Assist the ED in identifying and recruiting other Board Members. 

  • Partner with the ED and other Board Members to ensure that board goals are carried out.

  • Represent Justice for My Sister to stakeholders and your professional network as an ambassador for the organization.

Qualifications

  • Leadership experience in business, government, philanthropy, film/TV, or the nonprofit sector.

  • A commitment to and understanding of Justice for My Sister’s beneficiaries. 

  • Keen diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and convening, facilitating and building consensus among diverse individuals. 

  • Integrity, credibility, a passion for improving the lives of Justice for My Sister’s beneficiaries.

Fundraising Commitment: Raise $2,500 for organization each fiscal year, including a $500 personal contribution. 

Term Length: The required term length for Board Members is two years. Service on Justice for My Sister’s Advisory Board is a voluntary role not resulting in remuneration, except for travel and accommodation costs in relation to Board Member duties. This is a distinctly unique leadership opportunity for professionals looking to contribute to the legacy of an LA-based nonprofit nearing its 10-year anniversay that impacts upwards of 3,000 community members a year through our 3 areas of work: youth leadership, workforce development, and systems change.
